Between two world wars, on today area of Osijek - Baranya County, first airport was nearby city of Vukovar. After the II World War, only sports aviation existed in East Croatia what led to year 1971 when was born the idea of building Osijek Airport. The airport was built nearby village Klisa, on regional road Osijek - Vukovar, 20 km from city of Osijek. The airport was built for referent aircraft Boing 707 and became operational for traffic in 1980. Passenger traffic from 1980 to 1991 was 38.000 passengers per year on regular domestic flights, when cargo traffic was around 3.000 tones. During aggression on Republic of Croatia, Osijek Airport was occupied, devastated and most of the system and equipment was destroyed or stole. Because of importance and increased need for air traffic on national level, sport airport in Čepin was opened as regional airport in period from1990 to December of 2001. Then Osijek Airport on location Klisa was reopened after reaching minimal technical conditions for air traffic.
